“The difference between you and me is that I don’t believe things on blind faith…”
That quote came from a good friend of mine who I have been discussing these issues with for years. If you find yourself in the same place, then I ask you to join me on this journey. You’ve been misled. To put this simply, the evidence that supports the fact that the Universe and all the life you see around you was created is overwhelming. The Creator who is responsible for everything you see around is God, identified reliably in the pages of the Bible. There are good answers to the hard questions that you have for God. Come and join us as we look at all of these things.
Now we all agree that blind faith would be bad. But what do you call believing that luck is the answer to many of the hardest questions of how the universe was formed or how we got here? It’s an interesting question isn’t it? Surely that isn’t the case? Is it?
What are the most common misconceptions people have about God?
1. I’ve done too many bad things. God would never forgive me.
No, you haven’t. Let me tell you the story of Paul. Before he became Paul the Apostle, he was Saul of Tarsus. Saul persecuted the church to the point of putting people to death. Jesus not only forgave Paul, He used Paul to become perhaps the greatest Apostle of all time.
2. Even if God could forgive me, He must still be angry with me.
This is not the case. You see, Jesus made the decision to go to the cross to pay for our sins before He laid the foundations of the Earth (Eph 1:3-10). He loved you so much, He forgave you and considered you worth the price to be paid on the cross before the first sunrise ever occurred. Justice was settled at the cross.
3. God is some distant, impersonal force, not Someone who I could have a relationship with.
The answers to the first two questions should begin to help you understand that nothing could be further from the truth. The universe around us shows His care, handiwork and attention to detail. He is there waiting for you to begin that relationship, closer than you could ever imagine. He loves you.
God loves me?
I think I’m perhaps most surprised at the anger, fear and distrust people direct toward God. Yes, He loves you more than you could ever imagine. He died for you. Not just for all of humankind, but for you individually. There is so much to unpack here. Just open up your heart to the possibility that God loves you so much, He created the universe to set the stage to make the offer of a relationship with you, willing to pay the price in His own body and blood to seal the offer.
Why not just jump into the hard questions if there are answers to them?
This is a journey. I’ve watched too many debates over the years, and it is far too easy to keep pushing God away one question at a time, never letting Him get close. The best way to approach this is to first understand that God loves you, and to understand who God is and what his purpose is. Second, it is necessary to see that love in the universe that exists around us to confirm once and for all that we were created. Removing that question forces us to actually look in the mirror and seek out God Himself. Finally, within that context, the difficult questions we have for God make much more sense.
